- Letter from the editor: A year in review
This issue marks a year since Women Legal magazine launched. And what a year it has been. Dominated by a global financial crisis that brought the big-firm bubble close to bursting point and a swine flu pandemic that has according to the latest figures from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control resulted in 3,555 deaths to date worldwide, the past 12 months have been, for many, a year like no other.

- Letter from the editor: Onwards and upwards?
Spring has well and truly sprung in these past few weeks and as the season of rebirth gradually inches into Summer it seems fitting that this has coincided with the birth of a new craze among recession-watchers that of green shoot spotting. Yes, it seems that the phrase green shoots of recovery has become the mantra of choice among economists, financial analysts, and journalists the world over, desperate for a sign that the end of the fiscal gloom is nigh.

- Editor's letter: The best of times?
Its official. We are in the midst of the first-ever equal opportunities recession. Yes thats right. Seemingly not content with being the worst recession to hit the western world in recent times, this fiscal crisis has ensured its place in the history books by striking at a time when more women are employed than ever before, and, therefore, when more women are likely to feel the nasty effects of negative growth.

- Letter from the editor: A new era...
The American author and critic, Mayra Mannes, once wrote: Nobody objects to a woman being a good writer or sculptor or geneticist if at the same time she manages to be a good wife, a good mother, good-looking, good-tempered, well-dressed, well-groomed, and unaggressive. It was a tell-tale insight into the many limitations women of her time faced on a daily basis. This was the 1960s a period often referred to as second wave feminism when women may have gained the right to vote but still fought for equality in many other aspects of their lives, from the workplace to the home. Fast-forward 40 years and it is remarkable how little has changed.
